And one of the biggest advantages of getting married at the Calgary Marriott Downtown is its location.
The hotel sits right beside the Calgary Tower and only steps from Stephen Avenue, making it incredibly easy to leave the hotel for wedding portraits without spending a large portion of your wedding day driving between locations.
For couples who want their wedding photography to feel timeless, elegant and slightly editorial while still remaining natural, a downtown Calgary wedding can be absolutely beautiful.
An Elegant Wedding at the Calgary Marriott Downtown
Insung and John's wedding was a perfect example of why I enjoy photographing weddings in downtown Calgary so much.
Their celebration was elegant, intimate and filled with personal details.
From the beginning of the day, I wanted their photographs to capture more than simply how everything looked. I wanted their gallery to preserve the atmosphere of the wedding, their connection with each other and all of those little moments happening around them throughout the day.
The clean, modern surroundings of the Calgary Marriott complemented their wedding beautifully and gave us a wonderful starting point for their photographs.
The Marriott offers several wedding and event spaces, along with its downtown rooftop patio. Having so much of the wedding day in one location also means couples can spend less time travelling and more time actually enjoying their celebration.

One of the biggest advantages of hosting a wedding in downtown Calgary is the opportunity for stunning city portraits. Especially when you bring your puppy with you as they did.

Downtown Calgary Wedding Photos on Stephen Avenue
After the ceremony, we stepped outside for wedding portraits in downtown Calgary.
One of my favourite things about photographing a Calgary Marriott wedding is how quickly we can completely change the look of the photographs.
Within minutes of leaving the hotel, we can move from elegant hotel interiors to the architecture and energy of downtown Calgary.
For Insung and John, we explored the area around Stephen Avenue, creating relaxed wedding portraits surrounded by Calgary's urban architecture.
And of course, their puppy joined us too.
Including pets in wedding photographs always makes the experience more personal, and these became some of my favourite photographs from their day.
I don't want wedding portraits to feel like an hour-long posing exercise. I prefer creating a little space for my couples to walk, interact and enjoy a few quiet moments together while I gently guide them when needed.
The result is a mixture of editorial portraits and natural photographs that still feel like you.

Why I Love Downtown Calgary for Wedding Photography
Calgary has a surprising amount of variety within a relatively small downtown area.
Stephen Avenue provides historic architecture and a classic city atmosphere, while other areas offer glass towers, modern architecture, bridges, parks and views of the Calgary skyline.
This allows us to create a wedding gallery with several completely different looks without travelling far from your venue.
Depending on your wedding timeline, some of my favourite options for downtown Calgary wedding photographyinclude:

Calgary Marriott Rooftop Wedding Reception
After our downtown portraits, we returned to the Marriott for the celebration.
One of the hotel's most distinctive features is its rooftop patio, which creates a completely different atmosphere from a traditional ballroom reception.
And Calgary gave us a little bit of everything that evening, including rain.
Instead of letting it stop the celebration, everyone embraced it.
Dancing outside on the rooftop in the rain ended up creating some of the most memorable photographs of the evening.
Those unexpected moments are often what make a wedding gallery feel personal years later.
Perfect weather is wonderful, but you don't need perfect weather to have beautiful wedding photographs.
Planning Wedding Photos Around Calgary Weather
If you are planning a wedding in Calgary, having a weather backup is always a good idea.
Our weather can change incredibly quickly, even during summer.
One advantage of a downtown hotel wedding is that we have beautiful indoor spaces available while also being close to several outdoor photography locations.
There are also indoor options around downtown Calgary, including Devonian Gardens. Professional photography there requires advance planning and a photography permit, so this is something that should be arranged before the wedding rather than treated as a last-minute rain location.
When I photograph a wedding, I always watch the forecast leading up to the day and adjust our photography plan when necessary.
Sometimes that means changing the order of photographs. Sometimes it means taking advantage of a ten-minute break in the rain.
And sometimes we simply grab a few umbrellas and create something beautiful in the weather we have.
How Much Time Should You Allow for Downtown Calgary Wedding Photos?
For most downtown Calgary weddings, I recommend allowing approximately 45–90 minutes for couple and wedding party portraits, depending on the number of locations you would like to visit.
You don't necessarily need to spend several hours travelling around Calgary to create variety.
If your wedding is at the Marriott, we can photograph inside and around the hotel before walking to nearby downtown locations.
If you want to include somewhere farther away, such as Peace Bridge, we can build that into your timeline ahead of time.
My priority is always finding the right balance between creating beautiful photographs and allowing you to actually experience your wedding.
Should You Have a First Look?
A first look can work particularly well for downtown Calgary weddings.
Photographing some of your portraits before the ceremony can give us more flexibility with the timeline and allow you to spend more of cocktail hour with your guests.
It can also give us more freedom to explore one or two downtown photography locations without feeling rushed.
A first look isn't necessary for every couple, though.

Can we take nighttime wedding photographs downtown?
Absolutely. Downtown Calgary can look completely different after sunset. City lights, hotel entrances, streets and Calgary's architecture can create dramatic evening portraits. I often recommend setting aside just 10–15 minutes during the reception for evening photographs when the timeline allows.
How far in advance should we book our Calgary wedding photographer?
Popular summer and fall Saturdays can book well in advance. If photography is one of your priorities, I recommend reaching out as soon as your venue and wedding date are confirmed.
