Bow Lake & Peyto Lake Engagement Photos | Banff Couple Photographer

There is something incredibly beautiful about photographing couples in the Canadian Rockies when the weather refuses to follow the forecast. Monica and Vincent’s early September engagement session was the perfect example.

We met at Bow Lake early in the morning in the beginning of September, with dark clouds hanging over the mountains and every indication that rain was on its way. Instead, just as we began our session, the sky opened enough to give us the most beautiful soft light.

Early Morning Engagement Photos at Bow Lake

Bow Lake is one of my favourite locations for engagement photos and intimate elopements in Banff National Park. Surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, glacier-fed water and an incredible open landscape, it feels completely different depending on the weather.

For Monica and Vincent, the clouds became part of the story.

They moved constantly around the mountains, sometimes hiding the peaks and then revealing them again only minutes later. We took full advantage of the changing conditions, creating engagement photos that felt romantic, natural and a little dramatic.

There was no harsh sunlight that morning—just soft mountain light, beautiful reflections and clouds dancing around Bow Lake.

And then we continued toward Peyto Lake, where everything changed.

A Foggy Peyto Lake Engagement Session

By the time we hiked up to Peyto Lake, we were literally surrounded by fog.

Instead of the famous bright turquoise view stretching through the valley, the mountains disappeared almost completely. Clouds moved across the lookout and wrapped around us, creating an atmosphere that felt quiet, intimate and almost surreal.

It was completely different from what we had planned and absolutely beautiful in its own way.

This is one of the things I love most about photographing engagement sessions and elopements in Banff National Park. The mountains are unpredictable. Sunshine can turn into fog, clouds can disappear within minutes, and a location you have photographed many times can suddenly look completely new.

Bow Lake and Peyto Lake are beautiful choices for couples looking for a Rocky Mountain setting for an engagement session, proposal, intimate wedding or Banff elopement.

Combining the two locations also gives you two completely different landscapes within the same experience. Bow Lake offers incredible lake-level mountain views, while Peyto Lake gives you one of the most recognizable elevated views in the Canadian Rockies.

And sometimes, like during Monica and Vincent’s session, the weather creates something you could never plan.

As a Banff couple and engagement photographer, I help my couples choose locations, timing and photography plans that work with the mountains rather than against them. Whether we have sunshine, dramatic clouds or a morning completely surrounded by fog, my goal is to create photographs that still feel natural, timeless and true to your experience.

If you are planning a Bow Lake elopement, Peyto Lake elopement, Banff engagement session or couples photos in the Canadian Rockies, I would love to help you plan an experience around these incredible locations.
