What to Wear for Fall Photos in Banff: A Canadian Rockies Photographer’s Fall Outfit Guide

The days are getting colder in the Canadian Rockies, but somehow the mountains are getting even more beautiful.

September and early October are some of my favourite times of year as a Banff photographer. The air becomes crisp, the landscape begins to change from summer green to beautiful shades of gold, and fall slowly arrives in Banff, Canmore and Kananaskis.

And one of the most beautiful times of the entire year is almost here:

Larch season in the Canadian Rockies.

For a few short weeks each fall, the larch trees turn brilliant shades of gold against the mountains. Combined with turquoise lakes, evergreen forests and sometimes even freshly snow-covered peaks, it creates an incredible backdrop for Banff engagement photos, couples photography, proposals, family sessions and mountain elopements.

If you have a fall photo shoot booked with me—or you're thinking about planning one—I've put together this guide to help you decide what to wear for fall photos in Banff and the Canadian Rockies.

What Colours Photograph Best in Banff During Fall?

My first recommendation is always to work with the colours of the Canadian Rockies rather than compete with them.

For fall photography, I love:

Cream • Beige • Taupe • Dusty Rose • Mauve • Sage Green • Muted Blue • Camel • Warm Brown

And yes—pastels are beautiful in fall!

Soft pink, dusty mauve, muted blue and sage look incredible against golden larches and the darker greens, browns and greys found naturally throughout Banff National Park.

These softer colours also complement my natural, true-to-colour photography style and help create photographs that feel romantic and timeless rather than overly trendy.

Coordinate Your Outfits—Don't Match

For couples, I recommend choosing colours that complement each other rather than wearing identical colours.

For example, if she is wearing a dusty rose or mauve dress, he could wear a cream knit sweater with brown, charcoal or olive trousers.

If she chooses sage green, pair it with cream, beige, camel or warm brown.

Your outfits should feel connected without looking like you intentionally bought matching clothes for your photo shoot.

This is especially important for Banff engagement and couples photography, where I want the focus to remain on your connection and the incredible landscape surrounding you.

Dresses Photograph Beautifully in the Canadian Rockies

I absolutely love photographing dresses in the mountains.

Long and midi dresses create beautiful movement when you're walking, turning or when we catch that perfect little mountain breeze.

Flowy floral dresses, soft maxi dresses, sweater dresses, pleated skirts and knit dresses are all beautiful choices for a fall photo shoot in Banff.

And don't be afraid of texture.

Knits, wool, suede, subtle florals and layered fabrics photograph beautifully against the rugged textures of the Canadian Rockies.

A dress can also easily transition into colder weather by adding a wool coat, cardigan, scarf or sweater.

Boots Are Perfect for a Banff Photo Session

Beautiful shoes are great.

Beautiful shoes that you can actually walk in are even better.

Many of my favourite Banff photography locations involve walking over rocks, grass, trails or uneven terrain. During fall, we may also encounter mud, frost or even early-season snow.

Neutral ankle boots, knee-high boots and simple leather or suede boots are perfect.

Look for shades of:

Taupe • Beige • Cream • Camel • Chocolate Brown

They photograph beautifully while still being practical for a mountain photo session.

If your dream outfit includes heels, bring them! You can always wear comfortable shoes while we're walking between locations and change when we're ready to photograph.

Add a Hat for Your Fall Photos

I LOVE hats for fall mountain sessions.

A simple wool or felt hat can completely transform an outfit and gives us another accessory to incorporate naturally into your photographs.

You can wear it, hold it, carry it while walking or even let your partner steal it for a few photographs.

Cream, camel, beige, dusty rose and brown hats all work beautifully for fall.

What Should Men Wear for Fall Photos in Banff?

For men, I recommend keeping things simple, textured and classic.

A cream knit sweater paired with chinos and brown leather boots is almost impossible to go wrong with.

You can also layer a button-up shirt underneath a sweater or add a wool coat, overshirt or casual jacket.

Think:

Cream knit + olive pants + brown boots

Beige sweater + charcoal pants + camel coat

White or cream shirt + brown jacket + neutral trousers

Try to avoid large logos, neon colours, athletic clothing and extremely busy patterns.

Simple clothing photographs beautifully because it doesn't compete with the mountains—or with your partner.

Layers Are Essential for Fall Photography in Banff

If you've spent any time in the Canadian Rockies, you already know how quickly mountain weather can change.

It can feel warm in the sunshine and become incredibly cold as soon as the sun disappears behind a mountain.

That's why layers are your best friend for a fall photo session in Banff.

Bring a beautiful wool coat, cardigan, knit sweater, scarf or even a neutral blanket.

Not only will layers keep you warm, but they also give us more variety without requiring a complete outfit change.

And they add beautiful texture to photographs.

What to Wear for Banff Family Photos

For family photography, my biggest recommendation is:

Coordinate—don't match.

Instead of putting everyone in exactly the same colour, choose a palette of three or four complementary colours.

For example:

Cream + Sage + Camel + Brown

or

Dusty Rose + Beige + Cream + Taupe

Then mix different shades and textures throughout everyone's outfits.

Sweaters, dresses, knitwear, coats and boots can all work beautifully together.

The result feels coordinated while still allowing everyone's personality to come through.

Larch Season in Banff Can Be Cold

Golden larches may look wonderfully warm in photographs, but don't let those colours fool you!

Fall weather in Banff, Canmore and Kananaskis can change quickly. Depending on our location and elevation, we can experience wind, frost and even snow during September and October.

My biggest advice is:

Dress beautifully—but dress realistically.

If you're freezing, eventually it will show in your face and body language.

You can always bring an extra warm jacket and take it off for a few minutes while we're photographing. Hand warmers are another little trick I recommend for particularly cold mornings.

Comfortable people photograph beautifully.

What to Avoid for Your Banff Photo Shoot

There really aren't many strict rules, but I generally recommend avoiding neon colours, very large logos, extremely busy patterns and outfits that feel uncomfortable or unlike you.

Also consider how your outfit will look against the landscape.

The Canadian Rockies are already spectacular. Your clothing doesn't need to compete with the scenery.

Instead, think soft colours, beautiful textures, layers and movement.

Most importantly, choose something that makes you feel confident.

Fall Engagement, Couples, Proposal & Family Photography in Banff

Fall is one of the most incredible times to plan photography in the Canadian Rockies.

Whether you're celebrating an engagement, secretly planning a proposal, visiting Banff with your family, celebrating an anniversary or simply want beautiful photographs of the two of you surrounded by the mountains, autumn gives us some truly spectacular conditions.

As a Banff photographer, I photograph couples, engagements, surprise proposals, families, weddings and elopements throughout Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Canmore, Kananaskis and the Canadian Rockies.

I can help you choose not only what to wear, but also the best photography location and time of day based on the season, light, weather and the type of photographs you want to create.

From beautiful mountain lakes around Banff to golden larches in Kananaskis and the iconic scenery surrounding Lake Louise, every location offers something a little different.
